Building niche communities in the online world is important for all brands. Transmedia strategist, Erica Hargreave, shares her top tips on using storytelling to build your community.
Erica Hargreave is a Digital, Interactive and Transmedia Strategist and Storyteller with Ahimsa Media. As a pioneer in the space globally, Erica has been creating cross-platform media and immersive storyworlds before she knew there were terms for what she was doing. One of her niche markets is in the creation of digital and transmedia characters, having paved the way for their acceptance on the web.
She delights in creating storyworlds that blur the lines between reality and fiction, weaving her tales around the globe; and empowering students to create their own storyworlds at post-secondary schools in Canada, primarily through BCIT.

Building niche communities in the digital sphere
- Who community is and who you’re trying to reach.
- Have you identified the right audience for your story.
- Find content that audience is sharing and share it.
- Do a character sketch of who you are…what are adjectives that describe you. What do you want your audience to know about who you are. Write your bio.
- Write 5-10 posts so that you have a backstory to who you are.
